Christmas Tree Recycling Program

Recycle Your Tree or Other Items Saturday, January 6, 2007 and Receive a Year’s Supply of Blue Bags

Stemming from the success of past “Turn Green into Blue” events, the City of Chicago is happy to announce that this year Chicagoans will again be able to recycle their Christmas tree or a bag of recyclables on Saturday, January 6, 2007 .

Residents and families will be able to take their trees to one of 23 participating locations on Saturday, January 6, between 9:00am and 2:00pm .  The trees accepted at these locations are converted to mulch which is then given to families for their contribution.  As was the case in 2005 and 2006, participating Chicagoans will be given a year’s supply of blue bags so they can continue to recycle throughout the New Year.  Blue bags are available while supplies last.

Residents may also bring a large bag of recyclable material or other shrubbery to be eligible for the free blue bags and mulch.  No wreathes with wire will be accepted.

For more information about the “Turn Green into Blue” program or any of the City’s other recycling opportunities, visit the City’s website at www.cityofchicago.com and click on “I want to…Recycle My Christmas Tree” or call 311.

GUERIN PREP TO HOLD ENTRANCE EXAM JAN. 13

Any eighth-grade student interested in attending a Catholic high school in the Archdiocese of Chicago should take the entrance exam being held at all Catholic high schools throughout the Archdiocese on Saturday, Jan. 13.

At Guerin College Preparatory High School , River Grove, the test will begin at 8 a.m. Students are asked to arrive by 7:45 a.m. and to bring their social security number, two no. 2 pencils, a calculator and the $25 testing fee (cash or check made payable to Guerin Prep).

Parents are invited to attend a special informational meeting from 8 to 8:30 a.m. where admissions procedures, financial aid and Guerin Prep’s educational program will be discussed.

After the test, students are invited to stay for a pizza party (free of charge) to meet their new classmates!

Wednesday, Jan. 10 will be the last Shadow or Gator Day still available for eighth-grade students to find out what it is like to be a student at Guerin Prep. The eighth-grade students are accompanied by a current Guerin student and attend classes and other activities from 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Students can download an application for Gator for a Day from the school’s Web site: www.guerinprep.org or contact Valerie Reiss, Director of Admissions, at 708-453-6233, ext. 28 about any of these activities.

Admission to Guerin Prep is based on seventh- and eighth- grade state test scores, seventh- and eighth-grade report card grades, entrance exam results and recommendations from eighth-grade Math and/or English teachers.

In its third year as a co-ed college prep Catholic high school, Guerin Prep currently enrolls approximately 700 girls and boys. The school is dedicated to developing the unique potential of a diverse student body through an extensive curriculum, excellent instruction in academics and the Catholic faith, service and extracurricular programs.

Although the emphasis is on college preparation, Guerin also seeks to instill in its students a sense of global awareness and to give them the knowledge, values and skills required to become active participants and effective leaders in today's world.
